The Launch of Disney+ in Hong Kong

Updated: Aug 7, 2022

On the 16th of November 2021, Disney+ officially launched in Hong Kong after its initial launch over two years prior in the US.

Disney+ is home to over 1000 movies and shows on different networks and channels. Subscriptions start at 73 HKD per month and allow you to stream with 4 people on one account at the same time.

Thousands of people signed up on its first day of release and popularity has continued to rise since with new titles getting added on a weekly basis.

Here are some recommendations specifically catered toward a Hong Kong audience:

Anita

‘Anita’ on Disney+ is the director’s cut of the 2021 Anita Mui biopic, starring Louise Wong as the titular character. This show, exclusively on Disney+, is an extended version of the film with over an hour of additional content. This series consists of five episodes and explores the tragic life of popular Hong Kong singer and actress, Anita Mui.

This show is particularly nostalgic for Hong Kong audiences as many followed her career until her untimely death in 2003. From the casting to the music, this biopic does not miss. It also includes original clips and songs of Anita, adding to the poignance of the story. Any fan of Anita would definitely enjoy this show - your parents might recognize her as well!

Turning Red

‘Turning Red’ is a 2022 animated Pixar film that features the actresses Rosalie Chiang and Sandra Oh. The film follows the life of Meilin, a 13-year-old Chinese-Canadian girl who transforms into a giant red panda when expressing a strong emotion. It is the second Pixar film to feature an Asian lead character.

Hong Kong audiences would particularly enjoy this as there are many references to Chinese culture and the daily lives of an average Chinese family. Furthermore, there are snippets of Cantonese dialogue to look out for that make the movie a much more personal experience for kids and adults alike.

Once again, grab your friends and family and watch this movie on a nice night in.

West Side Story (2021)

Starring Rachel Zegler and Ansel Elgort, ‘West Side Story’ is an adaptation of the original 1957 stage musical. This film is directed by the renowned Steven Spielberg. The story is loosely based on Romeo and Juliet and follows two rival gangs in New York City.

One of the perks of Disney+ is how fast some films get put on the platform after the initial theatrical release, allowing viewers to watch new movies from the comfort of their own homes, one of these films being ‘West Side Story’. With the musical talents of the whole cast, this is not a movie that you would want to miss.

OLIVIA RODRIGO: Driving Home 2 U

Last year, Olivia Rodrigo released her debut album and it dominated the charts across the world, including Hong Kong. Her album went on to win three Grammys out of the seven categories it was nominated for.

‘Driving Home 2 U’ is a film in which Rodrigo recounts the memories of writing her debut album, ‘Sour’ while taking a trip back to Salt Lake City where she first began writing it. The film also features new live arrangements of her songs and footage of the process, making this a film that die-hard Olivia fans will not want to miss.

With over 1000 titles under their belt, you are sure to find something that you will enjoy. This service was definitely worth the two-year wait in Hong Kong and now it’s time to catch up on all the content we missed. Find some friends or family and enjoy streaming your favourite shows and movies together!
